Since
the beginning of time humans have worn objects
made of metal and
stones.
We
have used our personal adornment and living space decor as
a display of culture and wealth as
well as, more intimately an expression of self.

You can walk into just about any
department store and you will see an unending assortment of jewelry in a
wide price range.
We can enter a fine jewelry store and
see cases of precious jewelry. You will rarely find what is termed fine art
jewelry in these stores.
Fine art jewelry refers to a one
of a kind piece made in a studio by an artist who expresses an idea or
vision through an original design just as a painter creates a one of
a kind canvas. Their work is in contrast to jewelry made for
production, pieces that are copied by the hundreds even thousands.
Art
jewelry is most often acquired from galleries, fine boutiques and from
direct commissions to the studio artist.
Studio Metalsmiths produce jewelry and metal
sculpture by methods and with tools that have changed little over the
centuries. They study metallurgy in order to work with gold, silver,
brass, bronze, copper, platinum, steel and other metals. They know
how to weld, braze, forge, enamel, cast, blow glass, use chemicals for
patinas, and other often ancient techniques.
One piece that is only a few inches
high can involve all of these techniques.
Very likely art jewelry will evoke
compliments and spark interest to others when the piece is worn.
